Migration and Up-gradation service
The latest version provided by Umbraco is Umbraco 9. There is no direct way to upgrade yourself from Umbraco 8 or Umbraco 7 to 9, but you can migrate it. Migration means shifting the entire content and platform to the newer one seeking better functionality and enhanced security.
With the launch of Umbraco 9, it is made clear that it is moving from the ASP.NET framework to ASP.Net core. In addition to this, the code base of Umbraco 9 has been updated, which gives comfort to its users.
The migration doesn’t mean that you have to start developing everything from scratch. You just need to migrate it. You can migrate your content from the version 8 site running on the DOT NET framework to Umbraco 9 running on.NET 5. The versions will be automatically updated if you are using Umbraco Cloud. With Umbraco, Heart core and Umbraco Uno, the server will automatically upgrade your system and your projects.
How can you migrate?
The migration from one version to another is easy. But sometimes, it is difficult. The difficulty depends upon the complexity of your site and how tightly it is coupled with the .NET framework.
Your content can be migrated from the older version by making a backup of the database for all your projects. This has been made possible because the database hasn’t changed between these two versions. One thing you need to make sure of is that the packages that you run on older versions should be able to work under the newer version. Umbraco HQ packages are compatible with Umbraco 9 but for some external packages, you need to check the status before migration. You can also reach the package creator directly to upgrade your package, as per Umbraco 9.
Why should you migrate?
With the latest versions comes the latest features. The advanced technologies, functionalities, and security features made it necessary for you to migrate to Umbraco 9. This is a better version than the older one. As it is based on the .Net core framework, it provides better stability and cleaner architecture.
Umbraco 9 follows minor release cadence. It means you will get new features and fixes every six weeks. Umbraco is planning to release the two major versions each year ensuring that the platform will run faster and data will be secured.
What will happen to Umbraco 8?
You can still use Umbraco 8 if you are not in the mood to migrate now. But to get better security and support, you should migrate. Also, after the release of a few more versions, Umbraco 8 will be considered the end of life. Hence, it is better to migrate it now, rather than do it later.
The advanced version of Umbraco 9 consists of Cross-platform capabilities and improved cloud projects. Umbraco has been a choice for more than 221,745 users. Umbraco’s community is proactive, extremely talented, and helpful.
